How long have you been at Vidant Medical Center?
“I am a speech language pathologist on the traumatic brain injury unit in rehab and have been with Vidant Medical Center since 2005.”
Why Allied Health?
“I’ve always been interested in the medical field. I was studying deaf education in Dallas and little by little I was drawn to the medical aspect of speech therapy, particularly the dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and neurogenic communication disorders. I completed my graduate work in Dallas and with a few detours along the way, here I am today.”
Why Allied Health here?
“When first interviewing with Vidant Medical Center, I was excited about opportunities available for growth. And in my experience at Vidant Medical Center, new ideas have been met with willingness and excitement – never resistance. I find that I am often challenged to “think outside the box” as I develop treatment plans. There are also many ongoing pilot studies and quality initiatives as the organization strives to provide innovative and excellent patient/family centered care."
What’s the best part of your day?
“Seeing patients improve day to day. It’s fulfilling to see patients regain confidence and independence as physical and cognitive abilities improve. In addition, interacting with families to help them learn about and cope with the injury. I gain satisfaction knowing that I am not only treating the patient’s needs, but the needs of their entire support system including family and friends.
Any parting thoughts?
“This is a demanding profession that requires continuous growth; continuing education is required to remain informed of current research and technology in the field.”
